About the university

The Almalyk Branch of NUST MISIS is an academic division of the National University of Science and Technology MISIS. It is located in Almalyk, Tashkent Region, one of the major industrial centres of Uzbekistan.

The branch offers programmes in Mining Engineering, Metallurgy, Automation of Technological Processes and Production, Electric Power Engineering and Electrical Engineering, Information Systems and Technologies, and Economics.

The educational process combines fundamental theoretical training, practical classes, project activities and research. Students may participate in academic competitions, scientific conferences, engineering contests, case championships and educational projects.

Notable alumni

Mikhail Maratovich Fridman

Mikhail Maratovich Fridman is an entrepreneur, investor and co-founder of Alfa Group, Alfa-Bank and the international investment company LetterOne. He is one of the well-known alumni of the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys, now NUST MISIS. In 1986, Mikhail Fridman graduated from the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys in a field related to non-ferrous metals metallurgy. During his studies at MISIS, he demonstrated strong organisational and entrepreneurial skills, took part in student life and met several of his future business partners. After graduating, he worked as a metallurgical engineer at the Elektrostal enterprise. Later, together with his partners, he founded a number of business projects that became the basis for the development of Alfa Group and Alfa-Bank. Mikhail Fridman’s professional activity is associated with the development of banking, investment, industry, telecommunications, retail and international business. Mikhail Fridman also supports educational and charitable initiatives. He is a donor to the NUST MISIS endowment fund and participates in meetings with students of his alma mater.

Carsten Drebenstedt

Carsten Drebenstedt is a German mining engineer, professor at TU Bergakademie Freiberg and Honorary Doctor of the Mining Institute of NUST MISIS. In 1977, he entered the Moscow Mining Institute, now the Mining Institute of NUST MISIS, to study Open-Pit Mining. During his studies, he completed practical training at major mining sites, including the Angren coal open-pit mine in Uzbekistan. He graduated with honours in 1982. After graduation, Carsten Drebenstedt worked for many years in the German mining industry. His professional work covered open-pit mine planning, geomechanics, mine drainage, mining economics, mine closure and land reclamation. Since 1999, his career has been connected with higher education and research. He became a professor at TU Bergakademie Freiberg and held the positions of Vice-Rector for Research, Dean of the Faculty of Geosciences, Geotechnics and Mining, and Head of the Chair of Mining and Surface Mining. Carsten Drebenstedt’s research interests include mine planning, mining technologies, environmental aspects of mining, land reclamation, water management and the development of international cooperation in mining education. He is the author of numerous scientific publications, monographs, textbooks and patents. In 2013, Carsten Drebenstedt was awarded the title of Honorary Doctor of Moscow State Mining University, now the Mining Institute of NUST MISIS.

Dmitry Viktorovich Livanov

Dmitry Viktorovich Livanov is a Russian scientist, public official and one of the well-known alumni of the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys, now NUST MISIS. In 1990, he graduated with honours from the Physical Chemistry Faculty of the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys, specialising in Physics of Metals. After graduation, he continued his full-time postgraduate studies at MISIS and, in 1992, defended a dissertation for the degree of Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. Dmitry Livanov began his professional career at MISIS as a researcher and lecturer. He worked as a research fellow, associate professor, professor and vice-rector for international cooperation. From 2007 to 2012, he served as Rector of NUST MISIS. During his leadership, the university received the status of a National Research Technological University. From 2012 to 2016, Dmitry Livanov served as Minister of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. Since 2021, he has been Rector of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. Dmitry Livanov’s academic and administrative work is associated with the development of engineering education, university research, international cooperation and the training of highly qualified specialists.
